In 1949, when Wallace "Wah Wah" Whatley was four, he posed next to this year old pine in a plantation planted by the Opelika (Alabama) Rotary Club. These seedlings were planted shortly after the Opelika Rotarians launched their tree planting campaign to put 35,000 acres of idle Lee County land into productive forest crops.
